Off the coast of the Philippines sits the teardrop-shaped island of Siargao, known for its calm, grounded energy that’s hard to find elsewhere ~ a mix of surf culture and local charm that makes it easy to slow down and stay a little longer than planned.
Our friend Em Fennell spent two weeks travelling its coastlines, driving palm-lined roads, chasing waves and discovering local cafés and warungs. Below, she shares her top recommendations on what to see, eat and do while exploring the island.
See
Explore the North ~ Pacifico
Take a day trip up to Pacifico, a quiet surf town about 1.5 hours from General Luna. The ride alone is worth it ~ winding coastal roads, ocean views, and local warungs {small cafés} along the way. Once there, spend the day exploring beaches and waves that feel untouched.
Cloud 9 Boardwalk
Walk the wooden boardwalk over the reef to watch the waves at Cloud 9, Siargao’s most famous surf break. Even if you don’t surf, it’s worth visiting just to see the power of the ocean up close.
Eat
End the day with a sunset cocktail ~ their passionfruit margarita is the one to order.
A small restaurant serving fresh-caught tuna and daily ceviche made with local ingredients. The menu is simple and done perfectly.
Our favourite breakfast spot on the island ~ great before an early surf. Try the Siargao coffee, a coconut-infused iced latte that quickly became a daily ritual.
An island staple. Kermit serves authentic Italian ~ fresh pasta and wood-fired pizza all made in an open kitchen surrounded by palms.
Do
Surfing at Rock Island
Take a boat out to Rock Island, a right-hand point break that peels off a small island surrounded by turquoise water. It’s great for all levels of surfing, and if you need a board, Big Mama’s Laundry Café has the best longboard rentals on the island.
